A day with the Baroness at the Rothschild villa

From October 23rd to 30th, 2016

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

To discover the villa and the 9 gardens 2 guided tours are offered in english. They will take you into the sumptuous world of the Belle Epoque on the Côte d’Azur.

THE BARONESS AND HER GUESTS
When the baroness Ephrussi de Rothschild held a soirée at the turn of the 20th century, all members of high society on the Riviera would eagerly travel to her luxury villa on the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula. For this workshop, two actresses will re-enact the lives of the Baroness Beatrice and her cousin, Duchess Elisabeth de Gramont, recreating the atmosphere of the preparations for a grand reception during the Belle Epoque.

SECRETS OF THE GARDEN
With her epicurean taste, Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild was a great lover of flowers, and would often bring back plants from her travels which were exotic or which had unusual essences. During this workshop, an actor will don the outfit of the Baroness’s Gardener, to guide you through this succession of plant worlds and tell you about all the different species.

Expo Francis Bacon 2016 Grimaldi Forum Monaco

The Grimaldi Forum Monaco has chosen as its theme for the Summer 2016 Exhibition: Francis Bacon, Monaco and French Culture. The exhibition will show over sixty works by the artist making it one of the most ambitious projects lately.

Roses & Plants Festival at the Rothschild Villa

Saturday May 7th & Sunday May 8th 2016

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild Fête des roses et des plantes 2016

The Ephrussi de Rothschild Villa is preparing for the 7th annual Roses and Plants Festival. On May 7 and 8 , some twenty exhibitors, rose growers, nursery owners and professionals from the world of gardens are heading to the villa to pass on their passion and knowledge about flowers to the general public. Walk through a plethora of climbing roses and ground-cover roses, both old and modern, in a huge range of colours (pink, red, yellow, white, orange) from the softest of pastels to the brightest red.

Whether a novice or more experienced gardener, the different exhibitors have something for everyone. Alongside the rose growers, in the avenues of the French garden you can find other professionals displaying rare plants, exotic or Mediterranean flowers, irises, citrus fruits and much more.

Several activities are also on offer to allow both adults and children to explore the world of plants: guided tours of the nine themed gardens at the Ephrussi de Rothschild Villa, workshops runs by florists to teach you to make bouquets, or by gardeners to learn the best way to repot plants.

If you want to go beyond the basics and learn more about roses and horticulture, you can listen to the talks given by the French Rose Society, or ask the gardeners questions – they will be happy to help.

The Grimaldi Forum’s big summer 2015 exhibition is part of the Principality of Monaco’s Russia Year and one of that celebration’s stand-out events.

How the “Bay of Angels” got its name

La Baie des Anges

Nice Baie des Anges ©CRT Côte D’Azur

In Nice, “the Baie des Anges” (Bay of Angels) is known worldwide … but do you know how the bay got its name ?

According to legends, this name was given to the bay because of the angels came from heaven to accompany Sainte Réparate, the Patron Saint of Nice who arrived on the coast on a boat adrift.

For fishermen, it is a different story! At one time the bay had many large fishes in it with side fins looking like angels wings. When the fishermen saw these winged sea creatures they called them “angels”.

So between legends and traditions … the choice is yours!
